MYTHOLOGY "hero" paper
Everyone has their own life experiences and their own hero story. In some cases people go through more tragic experiences than others. I think anyone can be a hero. If they have made it through tragic times and overcome fears. I have overcome many obstacles in my life. The biggest lesson I have learned in my life is “if you’re not happy with something then change it”. On my journey of switching schools from Basalt High to Glenwood High and then finally to Yampah. I had to truly understand this lesson in order to fulfil my dreams.
This journey of my life started at Basalt Elementary school. I went to Basalt schools for 10 years. Most of that time there I was very unhappy. I didn't ever consider changing schools or trying to make things different. I just expected things would get better the next school year. That went on for ten years till I realized I had to get out of the same routine. I was sick of the same people and the same drama. After my freshman year of high school at Basalt I wanted to switch schools to Glenwood high. However I was terrified to start a new school. I thought about staying at Basalt till I graduated. I talked to my dad about the switch to Glenwood and he called up the school and set up a meeting. It felt like I got into Glenwood schools right away. Before I knew it I was starting a new school. If it wasn’t for my dad helping me set up the meeting and help me get into Glenwood schools I would never have gone.
When I first started Glenwood I was so nervous I didn’t know anyone that went there. A lot of things were different there. It was difficult getting to know different people. It took me a long time to adapt to the ways of this new school, but I finally felt comfortable somewhere. I met so many new people and I really enjoyed it there. I had so many new experiences and I overcame a lot of fears with switching schools. It was such an exciting time of my life. I was very influenced by friends, i went down a path where I ditched a lot of school. I disappointed myself by ditching. I had to make up the work I missed and go to all my detentions for the classes I missed. Also all of the teachers were disappointed in me to. However I overcame that and finished out the school year in a positive way.
For my third year of highschool I started at Glenwood. This year wasn't the same as the year before. Most of my friends that went there had left. I also was frustrated with all the classes I had to take. I didn’t like any of my teachers and I was getting bored with my life. One of my good friends went to Yampah Mountain high school and told me how interesting it was there. I didn't hesitate looking into a new school this time. I was ready for another change. My dad set up a meeting with Yampah. It took awhile to get in but I was really excited to go. Once I got there I felt comfortable right away. I was little nervous at first but I got use to it. I loved the classes and all the teachers and people there. I am truly happy at this school. It has been a long journey to get to a school I enjoy.
I have gone through many experiences with switching schools. I am so happy i left my comfort zone and change my life. It truly was a life changing experience. I’m grateful that my dad helped me get into both of the schools. I know there was challenges of getting use the new schools and getting to know new people. However i’m more than happy getting out of the same routine and ending up where I’m at now. I am still facing some challenges in my life and I just need to keep in mind “if i’m not happy with my life then I should change it”.

Geography "Half the sky" paper
In many ways women do not have the same rights as men do in so many other countries. In the film “Half the Sky” it expresses the violence and discrimination against women. The movie is filmed in a couple of different countries showing the abuse woman are receiving from the men in their countries. Each country is different by how they treat their women. Including gender based violence; over 135 million girls and women have undergone genital mutilation. There are other women that are experiencing forced prostitution and sex trafficking. These women are being tortured from the men in their country, this movie “Half the Sky” is trying to help these women and put a stop to these tragic times.
Gender based violence is common in many countries, its an act of discrimination towards women from all ages. It forces women into silent, second-class citizenship. This leads to violent acts such as female genital cutting, rape, unwanted pregnancies and maternal mortality. One of the most common forms of gender-based violence is performed by husbands or by a male partner. This violence usually goes by unseen considering its done behind closed doors. Around the world, up to six of every ten women experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. The women that survive this violence suffer psychological trauma. There are programs all around the world helping women who have been involved in gender-based violence. The programs educate women on the act of gender-based violence. The programs also help the woman that have been abused, and give them medical care and therapy.
Forced prostitution refers to conditions of control over a person who coercion by another person to engage them in sexual activity. There is a difference between voluntary prostitution and un voluntary prostitution. Involuntary in considered sexual slavery. Most the women involved in forced prostitution are normally circumcised and sometimes it can lead to infections. In other countries child prostitution is very common. However in the United States it is illegal because of their age, they’re legally not able to consent to sex. Most parents, in other countries will sell their daughters to forced prostitution to get money for the family. In these countries forced prostitution has become normal for men.
Today more than 75 million primary school age children are not in school. More than half are girls. In poorer countries the boys receive the education and the girls work at home. Most girls drop out of school anyway. Also if the school is a long distance from the girls house the parents won't allow them to walk the long distance. Educating the women and girls is the best social development. However its hard to keep the girls in school. This shows the lack of respect women get. Not receiving the education they need, puts the girls in a higher risk for sex trafficking. Also they can not receive an income. If the women received education it would stop poverty and change the pooper countries, dramatically.
The movie “Half the Sky” was very moving, I learned a lot from this movie. It is very tragic that women in other countries are experiencing bad things such as forced prostitution, sex trafficing, Genitull cutting and thier edication is very poor. I never knew how good i had it here. I hope that things change and women didn’t have to go through this. I think this movie has really made people realize how bad things can get in the world. and some people really do need help.

"Be the change" paper
“Be the change you wish to see in the world.” In this class I have learned so much, not only about Gandhi but about myself. I use to think that solving problems in a peaceful way was weak. I thought that when people show you anger and violence that they deserve it back. Now i truly understand that “an eye for an eye makes the whole world go blind.” Since i have taken this class, I have been noticing that I have been put in situations where this was the case. Instead of getting mad and fighting fire with fire, I sat back and thought “what would Gandhi do.” I had to take a deep breathe and put all my fears and violence behind me. Doing this took real courage and strength. I found out that I was the one that was in power over the whole situation.
For our Be the change project I thought of many different things I could do that would be the change I wish to see. I thought about volunteering, doing random acts of kindness, giving gifts for people in need. And although these all really great ideas something came to me unexpected that truly made since. This weekend a good friend came to me in need, telling me that they wanted to take their life. I didn’t know what to say I wanted to change this more than anything in the world. I had no idea what to say, but the only thing I could say had to come from my heart. I told this person how much they meant to me, how special they are to this world. And what a great impact they have been on my life. I sat up all night talking with this person. I hope that I made a change in this persons life. This was the most important thing I could think of for this project.
This experience impacted me in so many ways. I learned how precious my loved ones lives are. I learned that I can help someone by just telling them what they mean to me. In my opinion this was the greatest change I could make in the world. To show someone that they’re is so much to live for, that life is precious. I wish to keep helping this person and help them get help. No one in this world should have to feel like they need to take their life. Everyones life is precious and I learned this through taking this class and going through this tragic experience.
"Learned helplessness" paper
People learn helplessness in their lifetime with different experiences, threw their environment, their parents or they have learned that they have no control. Thinking like a pestemiss is a habit that can be fixed. “One can overcome depression by explanatory styles from our parents.” In this article, “learned helplessness,” scientists studied the reactions of positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement. This experiment started with dogs being shocked and then led to people and their depression. Most people have to wait and experience pain before they can truly change their life.
In this article “Learned Helplessness” it describes how people have learned how to give up. Depressed people have learned that whatever they do they are incapable of producing anything useful, that it is pointless. Depressed people get stuck in a way of thinking. They constantly put themselves down and think they can't do much about anything. Nondepressed people think in more of a “explanatory style.” Its a way of thinking that is more optimistic. Instead of putting themselves down, they think of the reason and how they can fix it.
Seiligan was one of the scientists that worked on this experiment. He described how people can go through the same exact situation and have a different outlook. Seligman came up with explanations that could be rated along three dimensions: “personalization: internal vs. external, pervasiveness: specific vs. universal, and permanence: temporary vs. permanent.” These are all different ways of thinking, optimistic vs. pessimistic. Pessimistic thinking leads to depression it is classified as internal, universal, and permanent thinking. He discovered that more of an optimistic person thinks external, specific, temporary. The optimistic person would say something more encouraging. On the other hand the pessimistic person would say something discouraging.
People usually wait and experience pain before they can change their life. Some people do this because they are afraid to make the first step before its too late. Most the time people wait for things to change for them. They don't make their own changes in life. People that are afraid of change must be thinking like a pessimist, thinking of failure. Some people are influenced and go through experiences that can make them depressed. They can be influenced by other people and get brought down. Its their choice to change the situation, or deal with it.
Everyone reacts differently to each situation they’re put in. You can look at the situation like a pessimist or an optimist. You can always change your thinking with explanatory style thinking. You can get in the habit of thinking more positive. If you want to change something in life that you don’t like. You can change before its too late, why wait to change it? This experiment is very interesting and made a lot of sense to me. It can change your life if you try having explanatory styles way of thinking. Thinking positive is not having expectations its looking at life in more if an encouraging way.

Geography "babies" paper
In the movie “Babies” they film all around the world in Japan, Mongolia, Namibia, and the U.S. This movie shows a year’s growth of babies in these different countries. As you watch the movie you can see the difference between the babies. However they also have a lot of things in common. All the babies have their basic needs, they also have a magical bond with their mothers. The babies have different environments, they play with different toys and their clothes are different also. You learn that all babies are the same in every country.
One way most of the countries were similar was the bond with the babies and their mothers. Although they express it in different ways all of the babies need their mom. In Mongolia it shows the mom taking care of her baby. She gives him baths and plays with him. She also touch her baby how to be on its own. In Namibia the babies mom breast fed her. She also was always with her baby, even when she was working. you could obviously see that the mom in Namibia truly cared for her baby. In Japan the mom took her baby to classes to spend time with it. She took her baby out into town. The mother in Japan spent a lot of time with her baby around the house. In the U.S. the mom also took her baby to classes. She would play with her baby and read to it. The viewers could see that this mother would teach her baby things. All the moms would spend time with their children and really cared about their babies safety.
Another way all the countries were similar was that all the babies have basic needs. They all needed food, a house and clothes. In Namibia they had shelter and the baby got breast fed. In Japan you see the baby in its crib, you also see it in its house. In Mongolia the baby stayed in a yurt and wore clothes most the time. In the U.S the baby stayed in a house and had all different outfits. All the babies had different homes and ate different things but they all need the same thing to survive.
One way that the babies were different was their environment. All the babies grew up in such a different place. The baby in Namibia grew up playing in the dirt and didn't live in a building. This baby was outside all of the time. He was also very dirty. The baby in Mongolia was always around farm animals. He was also in the yurt most of the time. The baby in Japan was lived in the city. She was always in her house or at day care. This baby was always in a clean building. The baby in the U.S. was always in a clean building also.
Another difference between these babies is the way they learned. Also the toys they played with. The baby in Namibia played with sticks and rocks. he played with anything he could find. he was taught by watching other kids or watching his mom. The baby in Japan had all kinds of toys and books. She would go to daycare and learn things there. She had a park to play at and toys to ride. The baby in Mongolia had a couple toys to play with. He played with toilet paper. He would also play with animals. In the U.S. the baby had a lot of toys. She would play in the pool with her mom. This baby got read to a lot. Also she would go to the park and daycare. Every baby would play with something and learn from someone else.
In the movie “Babies” you learned how different other countries raise their children. They have different clothes and feed their babies different things. You also learn how similar raising babies can be. This movie made me realize that not everyone has the same benifits. Some kids are raised without clothing and some are raised with more things that they don’t need. I really enjoyed this movie and learned a lot.
